For teachers in Canada.

  • Claire, that sounds wonderful! I am sure your studio families will love this.

My 12-year old (who makes his own YouTube videos) recommended “Shotcut” to me when I was looking at doing more video editing. It’s free. There is a little bit of a learning curve, but he was able to show me the basics in less than 5 minutes. The program does hav…[Read more]

  • We are doing a Theme and Variations composition project using Jingle Bells. I’ll be recording all of the variations in next week’s lessons and compiling them into a video to send to each family instead of having a recital. (If anyone has any tips on how to do this or good software that can be used, I’d be very grateful as I’ve never done this…[Read more]

  • Hi Lori,

I have family that lives in Kamloops so it’s great to see another teacher from there!

That is wonderful that you took what could have been a negative (the pandemic) to change things up in your studio & see how you could meet the needs of your students even better. And, congratulations on your creativity getting jumpstarted! It’s an a…[Read more]

    Hi Everyone!!
I’m Lori and I live in a little town called Kamloops. I am the proud owner of a home based studio called Piano in the Loops. 😊 I have 62 amazing students from age 4 to 44(ish, she likes to say!) I have been teaching for longer than I care to admit – 35 years. It has been SUCH an amazing career and I am SO incredibly grateful…[Read more]

    • Hi Lori! Welcome here! Please tell me about “Music Mornings”. What is that? BTW, I’m from Chilliwack. 🙂

      • Hello to my fellow BC teacher!! We moved to Kamloops from Langley 3 years ago, and I really miss the coast! Don’t miss the rain, but I definitely miss being 20 minutes from the ocean. 🙂

Music Mornings is something that I am just brainstorming and trying to develop. 🙂 It will not be possible until Covid is done as it is more like a “drop…[Read more]

        • That sounds really good Lori! I think I’d like to do something similar. The moms will have to have school-age children, I suppose, so that they can have their group lesson while their kids are in school. Starting mid-April, I’m retiring from my day job, so my mornings will be free to do something cool like what you’re doing. 🙂

  • After this week, we are down 2 weeks & a group lesson week in my studio. With a practice challenge, recording week, virtual recital, & group lesson, it’s going to be a fun end to 2021!

As we wrap up things, what are you doing for December in your studio?

Let’s cheer each other on in these last weeks of 2021!

  • With the increased number of cases across Canada, I was wondering …

Are you still teaching in-person (studio, travel, etc.) or online?

Many of the teachers in our group have used a hybrid approach for this year. In-person when possible. Online when it’s safer to do so.

If you teach in-person, what is your criteria for moving online?

    Since we a…[Read more]

  • It’s hard to believe Halloween is almost here! Usually my students would be coming to my home dressed in costumes. This year, we will be meeting online … in costumes. I have a great steampunk outfit to wear.

What are you doing the same … or different in your studio this year?

I’d love to hear your plans!

  • If you haven’t already heard, Alberta Piano Teacher’s Association is hosting “The Launch”!

If you do not live in Alberta, no worries. Some APTA members live in other provinces so please keep reading.

“The Launch” is a series of online sessions to support teachers this year. And, it is only available to APTA members as a value-add. T…[Read more]

My kids have certainly been more tired after school this last month. And, my students that are in school are also reporting going to bed earlier than usual.

With so many students wearing masks all day at school, are you noticing students are more tired after school this year?

It wasn’t something that I had thought of going into the new year, bu…[Read more]

    Hi Kimberly,

It sounds like you have a great set-up that is incredibly flexible! I’m so glad to hear that you have low cases in Regina & have the option between in-person & online.

Let us know how things in the upcoming week!

  • I live in Regina and the cases are very low here. I am teaching 33 students in person and 8 have chosen to stay online. I have the pianos 3 meters apart and the students only use the one piano. I clean the piano and other touch points in between lessons. I also have a screen between the pianos and an air purifier in the room. I wear a mask all the…[Read more]
